Rallying together for Relay

Last week ended with our school-wide Relay For Life event. To open the Relay, the entire student body gathered on the football field for some brief remarks by the student leaders who chaired this event, seniors Courtney M and Jordan J. The highlight was kicking the day off with the seniors partnering with The Experiential School students to lead the entire school for the initial lap around the track.

Off they went

After deciding together what type of vehicles they needed, the Alpha students worked collaboratively to build a fleet of vehicles perfect for three- and four-year olds to handle. Then it was off for a 'drive' around the Lower School campus where the children ran into lots of friends. What better place to end their trip than at the snack stand to pick up popcorn and drinks to enjoy at the drive-in movie!

Mechanics in Training

Nothing has been more exciting for our Alpha students than their trip to Bob Lee’s Tire Company! Wearing the “Alpha Mechanic in Training” shirts that were gifts of the Lee Family, the children donned their safety glasses to examine the engines and undersides of vehicles and used their tire gauges to check the air pressure. They took turns operating the car lift and even the pneumatic drill, and learning how a tire is changed may stand them in good stead in about 13 more years! Hands down, this trip can’t be beat.

Parents, performing and presents

The Alpha students spent weeks preparing for their morning of performing for their parents and presenting them with very special gifts. How proud the children were as they performed in the Student Activity Center before returning to their classrooms where cookies were iced and enjoyed by all. The gifts, wind chimes that they had worked so hard on creating, served as room decorations while the children shared cards for their parents that included portraits and stories they had dictated about them. These are sure to be treasured for years to come! From start to finish, it was a great morning for all of the Alpha students, parents and teachers!

Meeting those who protect us, and their vehicles

Not one, but two, very special guest experts visited the Alpha students this week, and they brought their vehicles for the children to explore. First, it was our own Sergeant Day of CIS who brought the electric vehicle the officers use to travel around our school campus. The children were excited to learn that “Bolt,” as it is dubbed, is powered by electricity, not gas, and it was great fun to climb aboard and pretend to be the driver as well as to examine the engine.

The next visitor was Sergeant Christopher Vaughn of the St. Petersburg Police. Sergeant Chris, who happens to be Mrs. Carson’s brother-in-law, talked with the children about his job of keeping them safe. He also demonstrated some of the features of his police car, including the lights and siren. The boys and girls were thrilled to get up close and personal with a real police car!
